No matter how conflicted she is about the attentions from two different men, I root for her. No matter how bumbling she is when she tries to catch a fugitive, I have to laugh at her antics. It is hard for me to dislike Stephanie Plum. Which proves, to me at least, that sometimes the book needs to arrive at the right season of one’s life. The more I read in this series now, the more I appreciate it. Not only could I visualize the scene, I could empathize with her reaction. Where this is all leading: the scene where she locks herself out of her apartment’s new security system is one of the funniest things I’ve read in ages. And, yes, one of “her” men takes her to the range for practice. This time, she has it with her and loaded - albeit, with only two bullets, but it’s progress. Keeping your gun at home in the cookie jar is stupid carrying it unloaded isn’t much better. One particular plus in this book is Stephanie’s taking her own safety more seriously. In this one, Stephanie is again threatened by a crazed lunatic who thinks she has more information than she does.

You never know who to root for in these books. The main story, about a kidnapped child, though not funny, is handled quite well. It gives me a regular dose of humor to enjoy. She’s in the wrong profession, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There are about 10 skips (bail jumpers) she’s trying to chase, all the while solve little crimes and issues throughout the lives of her friends, family, and the people she’s trying to capture whom she takes a liking to.

In this book, it’s less about one particular mystery, although there is a driving case she is working on. It’s absolutely amazing to see the varying degrees of lunatics Stephanie has to deal with. Evanovich comes up with the hilarity in these characters. OK… so I cannot figure out for the life of me how Ms. 4 out of 5 stars to Hard Eight, the 8th book in the “Stephanie Plum” cozy mystery series, written in 2002 by Janet Evanovich.
